Excursions
The interesting and remarkable encounter between north and south in Swedish nature is perhaps best experienced in the Färnebofjärden National Park. Svartådalen is host to one of Europe’s richest natural environments and to the Hälleskogsbrännan Nature Reserve, where the worst forest fire in modern Swedish history took place in 2014, but which is now possible to visit. You can meet both moose and bison up close and personal in two of Nedre Dalälven’s parks. The rich cultural history of the area can be experienced in one of the many well-preserved historic industrial areas. Notable among these are the Sala Silver Mine and especially Verket in Avesta, where the old and abandoned ironworks has become an experience museum, showcasing the ore’s transformation into steel and iron in a modern and playful way.
